Murder Suspect Apprehended with Public's Assistance


On Thursday, March 19, 2020 at approximately 1:00 p.m., Meridian Police responded to a shooting call at the Eastern Gardens Housing Apartments located at 200 23rd Street.  Meridian Police discovered a 22-year-old female shooting victim, identified as Clarissa Ruffin, inside an apartment with multiple gun shots and stab wounds to her body. 


Ms. Ruffin had succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased after her arrival to a local hospital emergency room.  Ms. Ruffin is survived by her three children who are 4 years old and younger, and who were reportedly on scene at the time of the shooting.


The murder suspect, 29-year-old James Dennis Stevens, who is the deceased's boyfriend and father to her youngest child, fled the scene and Eastern Gardens Apartments prior to police arrival.  With the public's assistance, police were able to apprehend Stevens minutes later at the Old Marion Road Apartments. 


Stevens is a prior convicted felon who is currently on Probation due to violence with the use of a firearm.  Felony charges that are pending against Stevens at this time include Weapon Possession by a Convicted Felon, Child Endangerment, and Murder.
