Local Judge Shot Outside Lauderdale County Courthouse Monday Morning

In Meridian, police are investigating after a shooting of a local judge at the Lauderdale County Courthouse, this morning.

Meridian police responded to a call reporting a shooting at 7 am, on the east side of the Lauderdale County Court House.


They found victim Judge Charles Smith, a Chancellor for the 12th district of Mississippi and family court judge, suffering from a gun shot wound to the abdomen.


Judge Smith was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.


Currently, Meridian Police does not have a suspect or vehicle description.


Investigators have collected evidence and are reviewing video surveillance from the area.


While investigators have already spoken with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation about this case, they also plan to contact the Federal Bureau of Investigation for assistance in investigating the shooting.
