In honor of National Blood Donor Month, Rush Hospital is hosting a blood drive.
Vitalant Blood Services were on site today collecting blood from volunteers.
The goal for today was to have 30 donors and the target for the month is 2,000. According to The Red Cross blood donations decline in the winter season due to illnesses and bad weather.
“The blood supply coming off the holidays was extremely low. We’re in desperate need of O type blood donations and we’re in need of all types. Whenever there is an emergency, we reach for those O types because it can go to anybody. It’s really the blood on the shelves that go and save lives,” said Katie Nielsen, donor recruitment supervisor.
Vitalant supplies blood to over 42 hospitals in Mississippi.
