Teachers in the local school districts are learning how to incorporate dance with STEAM learning.
“In the past we emphasized content. What we run into with the new students is that most students are kinesthetic learners. We were faced with a challenge of getting our students to learn the content while remembering,” said Eric Smith, Southeast Middle School teacher.
Teachers received a visit from a teaching artist who actively demonstrated ways of learning and keeping students attentive.
“It is proven that arts in the classroom does improve class performance. It gets the students involved. They don’t just hear it, but students also are kinesthetic learners and visual learners, so kids are multi-talented and multi-faceted. Once they can do the job or do the lesson it gets them moving,” said Dr. Rosalind Operton.
Teachers say this is another area to focus in on while in the classrooms.
“It seems like education is focused on state testing but with this we are seeing higher test scores especially within the classroom. Incorporating the arts is helping that,” said Smith.
