State Senator Willie Simmons is running for transportation commissioner to improve infrastructure changes in 22 counties. Today he spoke in Lauderdale County to share with locals why they should vote for him.
“If your infrastructure is good, your economic development and public safety will be in order. The infrastructure we currently have is falling apart. There are many areas like here in Lauderdale County and Kemper County that could do more for business if they had a better support for their infrastructure,” Simmons said.
Senator Simmons says this problem has progressed over time and will take years to see major improvements.
“We didn’t get in this mess that we’re in overnight and we want to be able to get out of it overnight. It’s going to take several years for us to work through getting the dollars into the system as well as identifying and prioritizing the projects that need to be done and working through a process in that matter,” Simmons said.
Simmons says if money isn’t spent to improve infrastructure changes it could affect citizens in many ways.
“If you live beside a bridge that has been posted or closed and your house catches on fire or you have an illness where you need a first responder or ambulance to get to you; if they have to go 15 or 20 minutes out of their way it could cost you your life,” Simmons said.
