Rush health professionals spread awareness about National Substance Abuse month

October is National Substance abuse month and health professionals at Rush Health Systems are doing all they can help those in need.

“The American Society of Addiction medicine likes to focus on recovery, diagnosis and getting out the public what we can do for people with this disease,” said Dr. John Mutziger, addiction interventionist.

Treating the disease first starts with people coming forward for help.

“We get people into treatment and follow up with them to be sure that they do what they need to do to stay safe,” Mutziger said.

Dr. Mutziger says individuals that have at have a family history of addiction have a 50% chance of being at risk.

“It doesn’t mean they’re going to have it, but it means that if they ever get exposed to the drug that kind of switches their metabolism, it’s likely to do so,” Mutziger said.

It takes a step by step process in order to recover.

“They have to reorient their values, their life, their activities in such a manner that drugs or alcohol are no longer a part of their life,” Mutziger said.
