East Central Community College launches Diesel equipment tech program

August 23, 2019

Today in Neshoba County, a celebration brought several out to celebrate the launch of East Central Community College’s Diesel Technology program.

“This is a great opportunity that our students will have to come here to learn diesel technology. It’s a program that once we did our needs assessment, the community was one hundred percent behind because they can’t find good diesel technicians,” said Wayne Eason, director of career & technical education.

The program has already started and will end in July. Students will learn about engine performance, electrical brakes, drive trains and more preparing them for the workforce.

“They’ll learn all aspects of diesel technology from anything to everything that they’re going to need to learn to get them out and get them ready for employment in a related field,” said Eason.

Among supporters in the audience United States Senator Cindy-Hyde Smith.

“The opportunity is wide open, but we are a rural state. We’re an agriculture state. We have to get those products to market and we do that with the diesel engine and because of wear and tear and normal circumstances the mechanics will be very valuable to this state,” said Cindy-Hyde Smith.

Smith says diesel trucks are all too familiar to her.

“I grew up in the trucking business with my dad. We had flatbed trucks; my dad retired as a Walmart truck driver. I’ve been around diesel truck engines my entire life.  Very comfortable there and people are comfortable and amazed when they find out that many years ago, I could definitely change the oil.” Smith said.
