The Meridian Public School District receives a grant

August 13, 2019

The Meridian Public-School District received a grant in the amount of $25, 800 to be applied in the arts. In doing so, a teaching artist will be brought in to instruct dance to pre-k and kindergarten students.

“Teachers are very excited; we have teams at each school who are the arts team. They have already been working and training this summer, all of those teachers went to a summer institute held by The Mississippi Arts Commission in Jackson, so they spent three days in training, and they are excited and ready to use those arts and integration strategies,” said Clair Huff MPSD Arts Coordinator.

Huff believes that incorporating arts into education is very beneficial to students.

“The research shows us that the arts can engage students, can motivate students, can improve student achievement,” said Clair Huff MPSD Arts Coordinator.

Many elementary schools across the district  will be participating in the arts program.

“Little Harris, Northwest and Oakland Heights will each have a teaching artist come into their school year through the Mississippi Arts Commission,” said Clair Huff MPSD Arts Coordinator.

Huff also says that this grant will help the school district advance in its arts offering but the school district hopes to see a future in offering more of the arts.

“We are working to bring arts integration across our district, but these schools will get more intensive, and have professional development because they are involved in whole schools,” said Clair Huff MPSD Arts Coordinator.
