Meridian Police educate the public on distracted driving

July 30, 2019

On a regular day, you’re taking a drive and have your cellphone in hand to read texts and get on social media, but then you hear a siren and see flashing lights for driving distracted.

“If we observe you such as texting while driving you can be issued a citation for being distracted while driving, so don’t put yourself at risk, don’t put the pedestrians and the other motorist at risk, “said Lieutenant Rita Jack.

According to the Mississippi Department of Transportation, texting while driving creates a risk 23 times worse than driving while distracted.

“Any activity where your hands may not be operating that steering wheel of that vehicle puts you at risk, we encourage the public to understand when you are operating a motor vehicle to do so in a safe way to protect yourself,” said Lieutenant Rita Jack.

There also is danger when driving distracted.

“Driving distracted could be fatal, if not fatal could cause serious injuries to you and others, so law enforcement is focusing on educating and informing the public how to be safer drivers,” said Lieutenant Rita Jack.

Texting may be the common factor to distracting driving but there are also other ways to get distracted while driving.

“Operating your radio, or prepping your hair, shaving”, Jack said.
