Poplar Springs Elementary became part of the Mississippi Arts Commission back in 2006, and they are now a model school in the Whole Schools Initiative. They are recognized for doing arts integration within classrooms and celebrated the arts with an end of the year festival on Friday. The children were exposed to various art organizations within the community that deal in music, drama, movement, and visual art.
"Children need ways to express themselves, more than just through the standard curriculum. Not everybody learns the same way, and these art forms help them show the ways they're smart and the way they can learn. It helps them develop their character in lots of different manners,” said Heather Pouncey, who is the Lead Teacher and Arts Coordinator at the school.
The Whole Schools Initiative is a program open to schools that use the arts as a vehicle for promoting high-quality education and learning.
