Toomsuba Headstart students visited their future home for learning, today their future teachers shared with them what kindergarten at Southeast Elementary School is all about.
“It’s important that we build that re-pour between us and Headstart, so that children will feel that transition more easily, we don’t’ want the children to be nervous or scared when they come to us, and them being able to come and visit our classrooms to see what they are going to be doing, to see what they are going to be doing, to see that we’re going to have fun.” Said, Sonja Murray Southeast Elementary kindergarten teacher.
Thanks to Headstart, students are taught basic principles of the classroom and academics ahead of schedule.
“I encourage parents to use head start, it’s a great program , they introduce them to their name, how to hold a pencil, classroom rules, routines, about walking in a line, things that most parents take for granted, if you only have one five year old at home, they’re not going to be able to walk in a line, it’s only them: socialization skills learning how to interact and play with other children.” Said, Sonja Murray Southeast Elementary kindergarten teacher.
By the time they reach kindergarten, they are already prepared learn what comes next.
“We learn all of our letters, all of their sounds, they will learn how to blend, they will learn how to read, they will learn how to write sentences on their own, they will learn about addition or subtraction, a number of things, it’s a lot.” Said, Sonja Murray Southeast Elementary kindergarten teacher.
