Lauderdale county sees high voter turnout

November 7, 2018

With it being a day after the midterm elections, Lauderdale county has seen a major increase in voter turnout.

“In some of these precincts, we had presidential-like turnouts. We’ve never gotten that for a midterm. So, for a midterm election, we had a really great turnout. Even when you compare it to local races, when you have governor, sheriff, supervisor, races like that… we had more of a turnout for this than we did in comparison to those election years,” says Chairman of the Lauderdale County Election Commission Jeff Tate.

In eight of the forty precincts in the county, there has been a sixty percent plus Republican turnout. Tate says the Democratic turnout average in all precincts has shown to be around thirty percent, and that with absentees, voter turnout is around eighty percent higher than four years ago.

“I think that not only did you have a contested judge race, you had two contested judge races. I think that all four of the candidates are well-known county-wide and in this area. I think that you had household names. These are people that the community knew, not just people that came out of the woodwork,” says Tate.

Though all of the numbers aren’t in yet, there has been an average fifty-five percent turnout in all Lauderdale county precincts, which four years ago, the average was in the upper thirty percent range.
