Social work students from MSU Meridian help with Habitat For Humanity project

October 1, 2018

In honor of World Habitat Day, social work students with MSU Meridian’s Phi Alpha Honor Society are helping out with building a house that our local Habitat For Humanity has been building for the past year for a family in need.

“I always had a passion for giving back to the community and helping others. Social work has a lot to do with service, and its one of our values. We give a lot back to the community, and that was one of the reasons why I chose social work.” -Erika Sledge, Social Work Student/ Pres., Phi Alpha Honor Society

With service being one of the core values of social work, they also strive to reach those in the community who need the most help.

“Service is a big part of social work, its part of our social work values. Also, we work with the vulnerable population, the most vulnerable populations when it comes to this profession. Whether its in the community or in the homes or in institutions, so that’s one of the big things we do in social work.” -Dr. Angela Savage, Dir., Field Education/ Instructor

Along with being able to give back, the social work students are gaining long-time friendships.

“It helps us to bond, because social work has a lot to do with interpersonal skills, you know, learning how to talk to others. We get to know each other real personally, and when we all graduate we’ll still be friends.” -Sledge

More volunteers are needed to complete the house. To volunteer or find other ways to help, visit the Lauderdale County Habitat For Humanity Facebook page.
