September marks voter registration month

September 13, 2018

With September being Voter Registration Month, it’s important to under stand the rules and timelines of registering. Circuit Clerk Donna Jill Johnson says with an important federal election coming up on November 6th, that now is the time to get educated and registered.

“We need people educated. If you move next door across the street—we need to know it. If you change a P.O. BOX or if you change an apartment number, your voter registration card can be returned, and your name can easily be removed from the poll books because of you not letting us know that you’ve had a change of address. So, it’s about education and people knowing that for their vote to count they need to be in the correct precinct.” -Johnson

Any new residents or any resident that wishes to make changes must visit the circuit clerk at the courthouse. While you must be 18 to vote, if you’re turning 18 before November 6th, you will be able to vote. Voter I.D.’s are required, and a current drivers license or one that hasn’t been expired over 10 years will be accepted.

Johnson says, “voting is a privilege. To me, it’s an honor because you’re responsible for what happens in your city, in your county, in your state, and in your country. If you don’t show up at the poles then you have nothing to say.”

The poll book’s cut off is always thirty days before any election.
