Meridian celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

January 16, 2018

The dream, unifying the world through forgiveness and love. today at Meridian’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. parade, the unifying message was brought to the community through dancing, the beat of a bass drum as it sets the heart of the tone of the marching band, and a community who is still remembering the man that paved the way for equality within the African American community.

“Our children need to know what it means to be free and able to speak and vote and go in and out of the same door that everybody goes in and out of. I think right now we’re making a lot of progress, but our young generation needs to know more about what happened; the reason they’re able to do what they are doing now.” Channie Donald said.

People from all ages came out today in order to reflect Dr. King’s legacy and to celebrate how far the nation has come and to continue to preach a message of forgiveness, love, and unity.

“We have to live just like him because if we are being treated different because if you’re being good and bad then that’s not good because you gotta be acting like the same thing.” Treasure Ramsey said.

“It was hard then, ya know when they had the fountains for colors and you had to go to the back to be served.,” Donald added. “I think it’s gotten better, but we’ve got a long way to go. we have a long way to go, but it has gotten better now and to have a parade like this and to see the difference and people down here to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday is wonderful.”
