DECA students visit Meridian high freshmen students

December 11, 2017

While the Meridian High School freshmen are young and full of school spirit, they’re at the age in life where going to class and studying for tests is becoming much more important. The MSU Meridian- Division of DECA came to speak to these students on things they can do to start branding themselves.

These professional skills and tips include anything from the way someone presents themselves on social media to how someone dresses for an interview.

“Well, I learned you have to dress really nice when you go to an interview. Like, you can’t be sagging, but you have to be comfortable at the same time. You have to have people skills to be able to do the interview. You can’t just go over there and just talk whatever; you’ve got to know what you’re saying,” says one ninth grade student.

The ninth grade students are also taking a class called “Freshmen Focus”, which teaches them the same skills and tips, but hearing the importance of these things from young professionals is something the Division of DECA wanted them to experience.

“Ninth grade is the bottom level. That’s when you start beginning to build yourself. You start to know what you want to be, what you’d like to be when you get out of school. So, starting at ninth grade always takes you up to 11th and 12th grade. So, by the time you get to 11th grade you already know how to dress, how to speak, and how to look at people in a broad range,” says a member of MSU Meridian’s DECA.
