Mississippi to receive federal grant money for charter schools

October 3, 2017

To encourage the start-up of charter schools in Mississippi, the federal government is channeling $15 million to the state over five years.  The U.S. Department of Education says the grant is part of $332 million it’s recommending for nine states.  The Mississippi Charter School Authorizer Board says it plans to oversee the opening of 15 new charter schools within the five years.  The board says 90 percent of the money will help subsidize the schools and the remaining money will go towards boosting the charter school board’s performance and the academic performance of schools.
