St. Patrick’s students host penny drive for hurricane victims

August 31, 2017

Every penny counts according to middle schoolers at St. Patrick’s Catholic School.  Students are taking that loose change and putting it towards a special cause.

“Since everybody is participating, we’re going to be able to raise a lot of money and we’re going to send it to the people in Houston,” said Jean Mayo, a seventh grader.

They’re hosting a penny drive and are asking parents and students to empty their pockets and support the effort.

“It’s been such an overwhelming response.  We’ve had even some of the youngest children come in with just a handfuls of pennies,” said Robin Meek, a middle school teacher.

“I don’t know the total amount, but I know we’ve had at least three 20s, four 10s, and a lot of 5s and 1s,” said Lennon Zettler, an eighth grader.

Meek said her students got the idea of a penny drive after seeing the devastation in Houston.

“Watching the images on the student news, the kids, we were all concerned.  We live in the south.  We know the effects hurricanes can have.  The kids and I were talking about what we could do to help.”

The students will hold the penny drive for the rest of the week and will continue to raise money for the weeks to come.  All money will be donated to the Catholic charities in Houston.

Today and tomorrow the students will be standing outside at the parent drop-off between 7:15 a.m. and 8 a.m. collecting change.  So be sure to stop by.
