Community Foundation awards grant, scholarships to Kemper County High School

May 19, 2017

The Community Foundation of East Mississippi gave away three scholarships yesterday at Kemper County High School.

“This was a fund set up by an anonymous donor several years ago who has a deep passion for Kemper County,” said Becky Glover, the community foundation’s executive director.

Each student received $1,000 to attend East Mississippi Community College.

“I look forward to going to EMCC and studying engineering.  The scholarship will help me finish school,” said Jered Gibbs.

The community foundation also presented a $1,088 grant to the school’s art teacher, Senecia Madison.

“It is so wonderful.  I couldn’t believe it when they called and told us that we had gotten this grant because this is a project that I have been wanting to do for a long time,” said Madison.

The project will feature a permanent art exhibit located at buildings throughout Kemper County.

“Like the nursing home, court house, and senior citizens building.  We plan on doing paintings.  I’m going to work with my high school Art 2 class.  We may even put some drawings in there too,” said Madison.

“That’s just going to give a great sense of pride to these art students, their families and friends, and to the community itself to see the kinds of things that Kemper County High School students are capable of,” said Glover.
