FEMA grants available for storm victims

February 28, 2017

FEMA is still offering assistance to those affected by storm damage.

“We encourage people who have had damage from the tornadoes who have not registered with FEMA to do so as soon as possible.  This is a process.  This isn’t something that happens overnight,” said FEMA External Affairs Officer, Bob Porreca.

The deadline to register is March 27th.

“Even if you don’t think you that you have enough damage, you don’t know what you’re eligible for until you apply,” said Porreca.

He also encouraged storm victims to apply for assistance from the Small Business Administration.

“The SBA gives loans.  FEMA gives grants, and FEMA grants only go up to a certain amount.  If you’ve had extensive damage and if you’re eligible for a grant from FEMA, it may not cover all of it.

That’s why there are SBA low interest loans available.”

He added that owning a small business is not a requirement to receive a SBA loan.  Storm victims are advised to keep track of their application by calling the FEMA hotline.

“Once you’ve applied, they will send somebody out to look at your damage.  Then they’ll send a report in.  Then you’ll get a letter telling you whether you’re eligible. Unfortunately, what happens is that letter might say something like you’ve been denied.  Don’t stop right there.  Read further.  The reason may be that you need to send more information.  You can always appeal that letter.”

You can register for FEMA assistance by visiting disasterassistance.gov or by calling 800-462-7585.  You can also visit the disaster assistance center in Hattiesburg to register in person.
