Family, friends, and members of the community gathered today to celebrate a world renowned ceramic artist. George Ohr, commonly known as the “Mad Potter,” was added to Meridian’s Walk of Fame.
“We’re just thrilled and excited beyond belief that this has finally happened. It has taken far too long for the recognition to come to him,” said a member of the Ohr family.
Meridian’s Walk of Fame is a way of honoring some of the world’s greatest artists who were born right here in Mississippi.
Ohr was born in Biloxi, MS, in 1857 and died in 1918. His reputation has since spread far and wide.
“He’s actually very, very famous. It’s kind of funny when you’re in your own home state, sometimes people don’t appreciate you as much they should. But he’s got a great installation at the metropolitan museum of art in New York. He’s in Los Angeles. He’s in Chicago. He’s in Europe. He’s really been acclaimed as one of the most art potters ever,” said Kevin O’Brien, president of The Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi.
Ohr will also be honored with an exhibition at the Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience (MAEE).
“His contribution to the American arts scene at the turn of the century was really important. A lot of great modern artists in America and early contemporary artists revered Ohr as the artist’s artist,” said Mark Tullos, Jr., president of MAEE.
