Meridian celebrates Veteran’s Day

November 12, 2016

Pride and patriotism filled the air as Meridian residents honored veterans during today’s Veteran’s Day program downtown.

“Our country wouldn’t be what it is today, of course, without our veterans,” said Van McCarty, the master of ceremony.

Residents shared their views about the event.

“We lost our son, Clarence Douglas McSwain, in 2006.  So, it brings back a lot of memories, but great memories,” said Sandra McSwain.

“I thought it was wonderful, especially since my grandson was in the 21-gun salute,” said Barbara Pezzetti.

“Every time I come I learn something different.  It has helped me to get along with other people from different cultures and different races.  I really enjoyed it,” said James Hearn.

The program included acknowledging the armed service branches, laying of wreaths, a gun salute, and taps.  The event guest speaker, American Legion Department of Mississippi Commander Murry Toney, discussed the importance of recognizing military families and helping veterans with PTSD.

“We need to take care of our veterans that are coming back from our latest wars in Iraq and Afghanistan because they have a lot of unseen injuries that aren’t visible.  We need our government to look into it and give those veterans all the treatment that they need.”

The program ended with a luncheon and Veterans Day parade.
