Divas on the run is inviting residents to run for the youth by participating in a 5k race and walk this Saturday at Highland park.
“We do a 5k run, a two mile walk, and a one mile fun run. We start the race right here in the historic Highland park, and we run along the neighborhoods of 40th avenue and Highland avenue. It’s a very shaded route. There’s only one hill, so it’s a very fast route. So anybody looking for a pr need to come and do this race because you can definitely get it on this route,” Felecia Brown said.
A community-based running group that promotes physical fitness for women, divas on the run is raising money to support the boys and girls living in Lauderdale county.
Last year divas on the run raised $10,000 to donate to the Boys and Girls Club of east Mississippi.
This year they hope to raise even more money.
“The Boys and Girls Club has been a big integral part of this area. They do a lot for the youth in this area. They’re always struggling for funds, so this is our way of lightening their load,” Brown said.
Brown says there are treats in store for all who participate.
“After the race is over, they’re going to open the splash pad so everyone will have a chance to cool off. We’ll have a DJ to play music and keep the crowd hype. We’ll have beverages for everyone. We’ll have two water stops on the route. We’ll have security in the park, so we’re looking for a big turnout. We’re looking for people to come out and have fun,” Brown added.
