James Chaney Day

On June 21, 1964 James Chaney was one of three American civil right heroes who were murdered by members of the Klu Klux Klan during freedom summer which was a campaign that attempted to register as many African American voters as possible in Mississippi, which had historically excluded most blacks from voting.

This Saturday; Chaney – a meridian native – is still remembered on what meridian calls James Chaney day.

City council woman Kim Houston says James Chaney day should also remain an important time.
