Needy family receives new roof

February 2, 2016

Joyce Palmer, the winner of reed’s metals free roof contest, was all smiles as she observed the installation of her new roof.

“I can’t explain it. It’s a wonderful feeling, a feeling that’s exhilarating all over from my head to my toes. I feel blessed again, fortunate, phenomenal.”

Reed’s Metals, a company that builds metal roofs, metal buildings, and pole barns, hosted the contest in an effort to give back to the community. Palmer, who lives in Shubuta, won the contest for the meridian area after her daughter sent a submission detailing why her mother needed a new roof.

“It was in pretty bad shape. It had been a lot of patching over the years. She needed a roof bad.”

The roof had suffered severe damage after hurricane Katrina. Without any insurance or FEMA assistance, and only a social security income, palmer was unable to get it properly repaired. As a result, she had to mop every time it rained and experienced lung problems due to the damp and moldy conditions.

Reed’s Metals employees volunteered their time to replace Ms. Palmer’s roof, which took about one day to complete.

Palmer will no longer have a roof made of shingles, which are commonly replaced due to wind and hail damage, but a metal roof that is very durable and long-lasting.

“She should never need another roof unless a storm or something comes through.”

Reflecting on the entire experience, palmer feels overjoyed. One employee shared his thoughts about the altruism of reed’s metals owner, Bernard Reed.

      “In my opi

nion the Lord smiles on everybody. For him to give back, a lot of times people make their money and they forget about other people, but he gives back to the community. That says a lot about his character.”
